Do I actually need this plugin?
Yes, if you run a multilingual site with Polylang and store site-wide settings in ACF options pages. By default, ACF options are language-agnostic, and Polylang does not translate them. PolyFields aims to bridge this gap by integrating ACF options translations as seamlessly as possible.
What do I need to already have installed?
You need:
- WordPress 6.5+
- PHP 8.1+
- Advanced Custom Fields Pro 6.0+ (options pages are a Pro feature)
- Polylang or Polylang Pro 3.7+ (only one of them should be active)
Does it work with free Polylang, or do I need Polylang Pro?
Core multilingual ACF options storage works with free Polylang. However, Polylang Pro unlocks extra integration: ACF field translation strategies and DeepL machine translation.
Will my existing theme code still work?
In most cases, yes. The plugin routes ACF options get_field('field_name', 'options') calls to language-specific stores behind the scenes. It also works if your ACF options pages have specific IDs (other than options).
I already have options filled in. Will I lose data when I activate it?
No. On first use, a guided assistant detects existing single-language options or data from the "ACF Options For Polylang" plugin and offers:
- Import: seed the default language from your current options, then propagate to other languages per field mode.
- Migration: move ACF Options For Polylang values into PolyFields stores. Your ACF Options For Polylang will be used as long as you've not started the migration process.
WP-CLI commands also exist for advanced or repeatable workflows.
How is this different from the free “ACF Options for Polylang” plugin?
While "ACF Options for Polylang" was a good starting point, its integration is far less robust than that of PolyFields.
PolyFields utilizes deterministic, per-language stores with built-in safeguards. It supports ACF field-level translation modes, includes comprehensive import/migration tools, integrates DeepL machine translation (via Polylang Pro), and uses asynchronous propagation and translation jobs for large options pages. Furthermore, it manages legacy autoloading to ensure your page loads remain performant and free of bloat.
If you are currently using ACF Options for Polylang, PolyFields includes a dedicated migration tool to help you switch.
Does it translate my options automatically?
It depends on your ACF field translation settings and your Polylang Pro configuration. With Polylang Pro + DeepL enabled, fields set to translate or translate_once can use machine translation, including support for async jobs on large imports. This integration fully respects Polylang's logic for ACF field translations.
We are also working on future features to further streamline the translation process.
Will it slow down my site?
Built with performance in mind, the plugin sets autoload to off for all per-language PolyFields stores, ensuring that language-specific option rows are not loaded on every request.
For legacy data, the plugin allows you to toggle autoload off (via import/migration tools or WP CLI). If you ever deactivate the plugin, it will restore your original snapshots. This directly addresses a common performance bottleneck in multilingual sites: having dozens of unnecessary keys autoloading in wp_options.
How does licensing work?
PolyFields is sold as an annual subscription that auto-renews. You can cancel your plan at any time. Please note that you must successfully activate your license at least once before the plugin services will load on a new installation. Once activated, the plugin will continue to function on that site even if the license expires; however, you will no longer receive new features, updates, or technical support.
